Why Texas lists five national titles and four NCAA titles
Texas's championship list includes the 1981 AIAW title and NCAA titles in 1988, 2012, 2022 and 2023. The distinction is the organizing competition: the AIAW championship is part of the program's national history but is not an NCAA tournament win. Keep that distinction when comparing school histories or counting NCAA trophies.
This guide focuses on completed championship seasons. Current-season polls and projections belong on the rankings page; they do not add to the championship count.
Championship timeline
| Season | Competition | Milestone |
|---|---|---|
| 1981 | AIAW | First national championship in the program's title list. |
| 1988 | NCAA | Texas's first NCAA championship. |
| 2012 | NCAA | Texas defeated Oregon in three sets. |
| 2022 | NCAA | Texas defeated Louisville in three sets. |
| 2023 | NCAA | Texas defeated Nebraska in three sets to repeat as champion. |
2012: the return to an NCAA title
Texas beat Oregon 25–11, 26–24, 25–19 in the final. The second set was the closest of the three, requiring Texas to go beyond 25 points. Bailey Webster finished with 14 kills and one error on 26 attacks, according to the official match report.
The 24-season gap between the 1988 and 2012 NCAA titles is useful context: the program's championship record spans separate teams and eras. A season without a title should not be confused with a season without an NCAA appearance or a deep tournament run.
2022: a 28–1 finish
The Longhorns closed 2022 by sweeping Louisville 25–22, 25–14, 26–24. Logan Eggleston recorded 19 kills and received the Final Four Most Outstanding Player award. Texas finished 28–1. See the 2022 championship recap for the match statistics.
A 3–0 final describes sets won, not an equal margin in each set. Here the last set went to 26–24, so the sweep still included a closely contested finish.
2023: consecutive championships
Texas defeated Nebraska 25–22, 25–14, 25–11 in Tampa. The Longhorns served 12 aces; Asjia O'Neal contributed five, including the title-winning point. Madisen Skinner had 16 kills and was named Final Four Most Outstanding Player. The 2023 report documents these totals.
The consecutive titles were won against different finalists. That matters when tracing Texas's postseason opponents: Louisville belongs to the 2022 final and Nebraska to the 2023 final.
Coaching eras and today's program
Mick Haley coached Texas from 1980 through 1996. Jerritt Elliott became head coach in 2001 and led the 2012, 2022 and 2023 NCAA championship teams. The staff directory separates current appointments from those historical milestones.
